OFF Meeting on Sunday 6th December

Hey everyone.

We have a meeting planned for the upcoming Sunday (December 6th 2009) for all you FanFiction authors and Fan Artists.

The address is Caffe Nero, 2 Charlotte Street, London at 2:00PM. A map can be found here.

We're meeting on the TOP floor, so you know - just in case you turn up and wonder why there's nobody talking about Fanfiction.

You will need to buy a coffee to be allowed in - I don't think Caffe Nero will appreciate people using their space without at least buying an Espresso.

So, to confirm for everybody...

Hope to see you there, everybody!

  1. Allys, Scourgeofthegalaxy,

I want to ask you two, do either of you two know how to draw? If not, have either of you two ever considered learning how to draw?

I am asking you two this because I think that offline meetings could be an excellent opportunity to introduce, explore, and share new ideas for fanfiction that are not restricted to pure text, and perhaps to incorporate a visual element to fanfiction, and I think that this would make offline meetings for fanfiction a lot more meaningful, and maybe possibly make it into an opportunity to learn how to draw (as well as write).

If I ever had the opportunity to go to an offline meeting myself, I would want to learn how to draw (even though I have no skills in drawing whatsoever right now) just for the meeting, but only if at least several others will also want to learn how to draw because I would want it be a community activity (rather than just one person drawing and the rest just being spectators).

  2. A good idea. I myself have no talent at drawing, but I'm sure other people have and would be willing to share their knowledge.

We'll see how it goes on Sunday. I look forward to seeing you there.

  3. Yes, I can draw and took A level art last year. Though my work can be quite stylistic and may not appeal to everyone's tastes.
I would certainly be willing to teach others if they so desire and agree that it would be a nice activity to occur at meets if people are interested.

  4. To elaborate, I think that fan-art can be incorporated into fan-fiction more. I think I have heard of some people drawing for their fanfiction, but that is extremely rare - I have come across this only a few times, and those few times are when I actively tried searching for it. I think that this is quite a shame, because "fanfiction with pictures" can be quite great, and can be more widely appreciated and understood than just fanfiction without pictures.

However, I understand why it is quite rare - posting it online just is not satisfying for this kind of thing. However, I think that "fanfiction with pictures" can be great for sharing offline, and can be quite "wonderful pictures and words," to quote someone else.

  5. I agree that it is a shame that the creation of Fan Art is so uncommon among authors, but, as you said, without having people to comment upon your work face to face it isn't satisfying enough to persuade people to do it.
I would also like to see more Fan Art and like the idea that these meetings could be used to help encourage it.

  6. Additionally, I suggest that you encourage everybody who shows up at the meeting to start a blog, to keep in touch with each other after the meeting - things like telephone and e-mail are too personal, but blogs are a good way to keep in touch with each other in a public way.

  7. This is one of the reasons we started this particular blog - to help people keep track of the meets.

    I look forward to tomorrow!
